Book Review: More Than Friends

I feel compelled to explain each time I comment on a book now. My reviews are lackluster. My enthusiasm for books has taken a hit. I don't wish this to reflect poorly on authors, but I'm finding it difficult to feel fully invested in the stories I read. Grief has a way of dulling things around you, and stripping old pleasures from you. I enjoyed my last Denise Hunter read, The Second Story Bookshop. Plus, I liked the first Hunter book I read, Bookshop by the Sea. This book, More Than Friends, was one of the few standalone books slated in the Christian Fiction Reading Challenge.

Jenna Greene lost her firefighter father in his line of work. Ever since, she has sworn she will not date a firefighter. However, when her best friend, Tyson, hints at wanting to move their relationship into something more, she is tempted. The story takes place on Chincoteague Island. I had read Misty of Chincoteague when I was much younger. But I really hadn't thought of that book in the time since.

The flawed characters face typical challenges. The storyline about Jenna's mother adds extra conflict to move the plot along. Each character's inner and outer conflicts ring true and realistic. This is a perfectly reasonable choice for Christian romantic fiction.
